Network Rack

Network Rack: A Network Rack (also called a server rack or equipment rack) is a metal framework designed to organize, secure, and manage networking equipment in one central location.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Purpose: Keeps networking gear neat, safe, and accessible. It prevents clutter, helps with airflow/cooling, and makes maintenance easier.
  • Equipment Stored:
    • Network switches
    • Routers
    • Patch panels
    • Servers
    • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
    • Cable management panels
  • Standard Size: Most racks are 19 inches wide, with equipment measured in “rack units” (U). One rack unit = 1.75 inches tall. Example: a switch might be 1U, a server could be 2U.
  • Types:
    • Open Frame Racks – Easy access, used in secure rooms.
    • Enclosed Racks (Cabinets) – Have doors and side panels for security and better airflow.
  • Placement: Found in data centers, telecom rooms, or server closets.

Think of it like a bookshelf for your network gear — everything is stacked, labeled, and wired cleanly instead of scattered around.
